Monsieur Chocolat

From circus to theatre, from anonymity to fame, this film follows the incredible destiny of Afro-Cuban slave, Rafael Padilla, who became Chocolat the clown (Omar Sy), the first black stage performer in France. He and the clown Footit (James Thi‚rr‚e, the grandson of Charlie Chaplin) performed a double act that was very popular in Belle poque Paris, until easy money, gambling, and racial discrimination took their toll on their friendship and on Chocolat's career. Actor-Director Roschdy Zem deftly mixes incredible feats and uplifting moments with thought-provoking themes of racism and the corrupting power of fame. Beckett based his Waiting for Godot characters, Pozzo and Lucky, on Footit and M.Chocolat.
